BlackSpace Engine

Crimson Desert runs on BlackSpace Engine, Pearl Abyss's own proprietary engine, not Unreal Engine. Pearl Abyss showed it at GDC 2025 with shallow water simulation, volumetric fog with fluid simulation, a timelapse day-night cycle, GPU cloth and hair simulation and ray tracing, and it is also building DokeV and PLAN 8 on it.

Crimson Desert runs on BlackSpace Engine, Pearl Abyss's own proprietary game engine, not on Unreal Engine or any licensed engine. Digital Foundry's PS5 Pro review opens its technical analysis on exactly that point: in a landscape where Unreal Engine has become the default, Pearl Abyss "has arrived with something genuinely new", and its BlackSpace Engine "delivers results that are nothing short of remarkable", from crowds and animation to foliage and lighting. Pearl Abyss presented the engine's features at GDC 2025: shallow water simulation, volumetric fog with fluid simulation, a timelapse day-night cycle, GPU-based cloth and hair simulation and ray tracing (notice 40). The Washington Post put Crimson Desert's development at seven and a half years, plus the years spent building the engine (Development History).

What the engine does

Water in BlackSpace Engine is simulated, not painted on. Pearl Abyss's GDC 2025 video, "Dev Archives: The Engine Behind Crimson Desert", opens with its shallow water simulation switched off and on: a rocky stream turns from flat water into white rapids breaking over stones, and a calm shore into waves washing between the rocks.

Fog moves like a fluid. The video's next section, labeled "Volumetric fog with fluid simulation", shows a figure wading through a sea of fog that swirls and parts around it beneath tall red pillars.

Pywel has a real day and night cycle. The "Pywel timelapse" sequence, played at 250 times normal speed, watches clouds cross the sky and the light change over a valley from a rocky peak, through dusk, night and dawn. Digital Foundry noted that days and nights last longer than in most games and that nights are genuinely dark.

Cloth and hair are simulated on the graphics card. The section "GPU-based cloth and hair simulation" follows a rider past long sheets of cloth hung on lines, moving in the wind at a riverside camp.

The last part compares ray tracing off and on in three interiors, the last a hall lit by a fireplace: with it on, daylight and firelight spread across the rooms and into their corners.

Lighting and ray tracing

BlackSpace Engine lights its world with ray-traced diffuse global illumination, calculated per pixel rather than from probes. Digital Foundry's PC preview of Mar 5, 2026, after Pearl Abyss confirmed the technique, shows sunlight bouncing around indoor rooms and changing with the weather outside, and at night the same bounce lighting coming from torches and sconces, not only from the sun and moon. Alex Battaglia compared the look to Ubisoft's Snowdrop games, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws.

Ray tracing reaches every console except one. Digital Foundry found the ray-traced global illumination and reflections on in all three PS5 Pro modes, blended with screen-space reflections and signed distance fields for distant objects, but the Xbox Series S version drops ray tracing. On PC the game adds DLSS Ray Reconstruction and FSR Ray Regeneration, and NVIDIA announced RTX 50 ray tracing for it on May 19, 2025. Update 1.08.00 on May 22, 2026 added ray-traced sun and moon shadows on PC (PC Requirements and Settings, PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Performance).

Water, foliage and detail

The water system works in three dimensions. John Linneman and Alex Battaglia describe waves that wash up on shore and fall back on themselves around rocks, instead of only rising and falling, and the same system running in streams, rivers and falling water, where other games usually hand-place the effect. They also note how much of the scenery breaks, such as trees and stumps smashed into water.

Almost no surface in Crimson Desert is flat. Digital Foundry's PS5 Pro review found displacement mapping on nearly every stone, brick and patch of ground, adding depth without more geometry, a technique it had "never seen" used at this scale; its one cost is flicker and pixelation along some edges. The same review praises the engine for shadowing distant trees properly and for foliage that bends to wind, storms, the player and other characters.

Pearl Abyss's own description adds scale and density. At gamescom dev in August 2026 its engine team presented "Scaling Open World Creation in Crimson Desert with an In-House Engine", on procedural terrain generation tools and biome-based placement for building a large world while keeping each region's identity, according to Pearl Abyss's press release of Jul 7, 2026.

Performance

Digital Foundry singled out how fast the engine runs. In its PC preview, Alex Battaglia introduced the game as "powered by an engine that is unique to Pearl Abyss", and the footage Pearl Abyss captured for it ran at native 4K on Ultra, mostly at 60fps, on a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, something he said "you really wouldn't get out of" an Unreal Engine 5 game. On PS5 Pro, Digital Foundry found it "one of the better performing" big open-world games of the console generation, with drops mostly in crowds and large battles.

Pearl Abyss's other engines and games

All of Pearl Abyss's games run on its own engines, the company says in every press release; BlackSpace Engine is its "next-generation" one. Pearl Abyss presented the engine with Crimson Desert's 2023 gameplay trailer, which it called "developed on Pearl Abyss' proprietary next-generation 'BlackSpace Engine'" (Aug 22, 2023). Its releases of 2026 say it "is currently developing DokeV and PLAN 8 using its next-generation game engine, 'BlackSpace Engine'" (Pearl Abyss, Jun 11, 2026). DokeV is targeted for the second half of 2028, Pearl Abyss's 2Q26 earnings letter says.

Frequently asked questions

What engine does Crimson Desert use? Crimson Desert uses BlackSpace Engine, Pearl Abyss's own proprietary engine, which the studio built for it and showed at GDC 2025.

Is Crimson Desert made in Unreal Engine? No. Crimson Desert is not an Unreal Engine game; it runs on Pearl Abyss's in-house BlackSpace Engine, which Digital Foundry contrasted with Unreal Engine 5 in its reviews.

Does Crimson Desert have ray tracing? Yes. Crimson Desert ray traces global illumination and reflections on PC, PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X, and adds ray-traced sun and moon shadows on PC; the Xbox Series S version has no ray tracing.

What other games use BlackSpace Engine? Pearl Abyss says it is developing DokeV and PLAN 8 on BlackSpace Engine, the engine behind Crimson Desert; DokeV is targeted for the second half of 2028.

What did Pearl Abyss show of BlackSpace Engine at GDC 2025? Pearl Abyss's GDC 2025 video of Crimson Desert's engine showed shallow water simulation, volumetric fog with fluid simulation, a timelapse day-night cycle, GPU cloth and hair simulation and ray tracing.
