Development History

Pearl Abyss revealed Crimson Desert in November 2019 as an MMORPG that had begun as a prequel to Black Desert, turned it into a single-player action-adventure, delayed it from winter 2021, late 2025 and Q4 2025, and released it on Mar 19, 2026 after more than seven years of development. Kim Dae-il, Pearl Abyss's founder, directed it.

Crimson Desert was made by Pearl Abyss, the South Korean studio behind Black Desert, which revealed it in November 2019 as an open-world MMORPG, turned it into a single-player action-adventure, delayed it several times and released it worldwide on Mar 19, 2026 (Mar 20 in Asia), a week after this launch trailer. Development took "over seven years", the Korea JoongAng Daily wrote, and seven and a half plus the years spent building its engine, according to The Washington Post. It started as a prequel to Black Desert and became a new world and story of its own. Its director and executive producer is Kim Dae-il, Pearl Abyss's founder and chairman. It was the studio's first new game in six years, and it sold 2 million copies on its first day and 6 million by Jun 11, 2026 (Sales and Player Count).

Pearl Abyss

Pearl Abyss was founded in September 2010, went public in September 2017 and has had its headquarters, "Home One", in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, since July 2022 (Pearl Abyss). It made its name with the MMORPG Black Desert, on PC, mobile and consoles, and also released the arena fighter Shadow Arena; its games in development are DokeV and PLAN 8. Every Pearl Abyss game runs on an engine of its own, and Crimson Desert was the first on its newer BlackSpace Engine.

The 2019 reveal: an MMORPG and a Black Desert prequel

Pearl Abyss showed Crimson Desert's first trailer on Nov 13, 2019, at its Pearl Abyss Connect press conference at G-Star 2019 in Busan, beside PLAN 8, DokeV and Shadow Arena. Its press release said the game "started as the prequel to Black Desert, but during development Pearl Abyss began to create an entirely different storyline and a whole new set of characters", that the name "Crimson Desert" was originally a region of Black Desert, and that it was "not a sequel, but a whole new IP". It had been in production since 2018, with Kim Dae-il as lead producer, and promised "both online multiplayer and single player content" with a beta for PC and consoles aimed at 2020.

The Game Awards 2020 and the 2021 delay

Crimson Desert's first gameplay trailer premiered at The Game Awards on Dec 10, 2020, with a release planned for winter 2021 on consoles and PC. Pearl Abyss's press release now called it "a revolutionary open world action-adventure that combines elements of narrative driven single-player games with online multiplayer functionality". In an interview that month it said the main story would be single-player. On Jul 29, 2021 it delayed the game out of winter 2021 with no new date, citing time to add new ideas and the health and safety of the team, as PlayStation LifeStyle reported. Crimson Desert then went quiet for two years; the multiplayer side was never released, and the finished game is single-player only.

The 2023 return

Crimson Desert came back at gamescom Opening Night Live on Aug 22, 2023, with a new gameplay trailer of Kliff investigating events in the region of Hernand. Pearl Abyss's release called it an open-world action-adventure "developed on Pearl Abyss' proprietary next-generation 'BlackSpace Engine'", showing hand-to-hand and wrestling moves, skydiving, climbing, fishing, arm-wrestling and taming wild horses. It gave no date.

gamescom 2024 and the 50-minute video

The first playable demo was a series of boss fights at gamescom 2024, Aug 21 to 25 in Cologne. Pearl Abyss released videos of four of them from that demo build: the White Horn, a huge white-furred beast fought in a snowstorm, the Staglord, the Reed Devil and the Queen Stoneback Crab (Pearl Abyss, Aug 19, 2024).

On Sep 12, 2024 Pearl Abyss released "50 Minutes of Early Gameplay", which opens with Kliff in a night battle in a burning camp, the Black Bears' attack that scatters him from his comrades Oongka, Yann and Naira. The video went on to Hernand, the Abyss and gliding, a duel, the Goldleaf Merchants and a boss Pearl Abyss then called "Split Horn", known in the released game as Kailok the Hornsplitter (Pearl Abyss, Sep 12, 2024). All of it is a 2024 pre-release build.

At G-Star 2024 in November, Pearl Abyss showed Hexe Marie, and on Dec 5, 2024 it released her boss fight, in which she attacks with swarms of crows in a walled courtyard (Pearl Abyss, Dec 5, 2024). A week later, at The Game Awards on Dec 12, 2024, it announced that the game was "coming to Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Mac in late 2025" (notice 31).

2025: the engine, the demos and the last delay

In March 2025 Pearl Abyss presented its engine behind closed doors at GDC 2025 and released a video of it, from shallow water and fluid fog to a timelapse of Pywel's day and night (notice 40). In May it announced DLSS 4 and RTX 50 ray tracing with NVIDIA, and in June Apple announced the Mac version at WWDC.

The 2025 demos dropped players into a war. PAX East in Boston (May 8 to 11) was the first hands-on booth in North America; Summer Game Fest Play Days in Los Angeles (Jun 7 to 9) offered a questline in which Kliff reaches besieged Calphade, where a traitor has joined the Black Bears against Marquis Stefan Lanford (Pearl Abyss, Jun 10, 2025). IGN's 13 minutes of gameplay from August 2025 shows that siege: a camp of wounded soldiers, a warning that Hernand is in danger if the marquis falls, and cannons to clear the way. The battlefield demo then played at gamescom (Aug 20 to 24, adults only) and PAX West, and Tokyo Game Show in September had 100 demo stations, Pearl Abyss's first hands-on booth in Japan.

The last delay came on Aug 13, 2025. On its earnings call Pearl Abyss moved the game from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026, citing offline distribution, voice-overs and console certification, and called it "a strategic decision aimed at insuring success on a meaningful scale" (RPG Site). On Sep 24, 2025, at Sony's State of Play, it set the date, Mar 19, 2026, with a story trailer captured on PS5 Pro, and opened pre-orders (PlayStation Blog).

Gone gold and the launch

Crimson Desert went gold on Jan 21, 2026: "see you in Pywel on March 19!" (notice 55). Pearl Abyss spent the last weeks on three Features Overview videos, a "Meet the Cast" video with the English voices Alec Newman, Stewart Scudamore and Rebecca Hanssen, and the official launch trailer on Mar 12 (Trailers).

The game launched on Mar 19, 2026 at 22:00 UTC (3 p.m. PT) on every platform at once, with reviews out the day before. Metacritic stood at 77 on PC and PS5 on Oct 20, 2026 (Metacritic), and Pearl Abyss's European CEO Lybee Park later said critics "had to play the build that is not the exact same version as the launch game" (Wccftech, Oct 9, 2026). Pearl Abyss's share price, up more than 70% since December 2025, fell more than 30% in launch week after the reviews, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported (Reception and Awards).

The first week brought two apologies. On Mar 21 Pearl Abyss apologized for "not providing keyboard and mouse players with a satisfactory gameplay experience" (notice 71), and on Mar 22, after players found generative-AI 2D props in the game, it said that use "is not in line with our internal standards, and we take full responsibility for it", calling them placeholders left in by mistake and replacing them in patches (Game Informer). Players came anyway: Steam's concurrent players peaked at 276,261 on Mar 29, 2026, as SteamDB measured, and sales reached 5 million by Apr 15.

After launch

Pearl Abyss kept patching the game for free, roughly weekly at first: "17 patches, with more than 20 new features and content additions" by Aug 12, 2026 (notice 118), including difficulty settings, boss rematches and cross-save. On Aug 25, 2026, at gamescom Opening Night Live, the game became Crimson Desert Enhanced, a free update with new cutscenes and five more voice languages.

The first paid DLC, Charting the Unknown, was revealed at Sony's State of Play on Sep 3, 2026 for Oct 15, then moved two weeks to Oct 29, 2026, 22:00 UTC, for "a more polished and stable gameplay experience" (notice 134). It adds sailing, diving and new islands.

The people

Kim Dae-il, Pearl Abyss's founder and chairman, is Crimson Desert's executive producer and director, and he "rarely gives interviews", The Washington Post wrote on May 7, 2026. He insisted that the game's Korean influences, from taekwondo-inspired moves to costumes, food and architecture, be made overt. Will Powers, Pearl Abyss's director of marketing and public relations, told the Post: "We are an indie publisher with a triple-A quality game," and explained the absence of a fixed public roadmap with "If you bake in a road map, you're presuming." Jin-young Heo is Pearl Abyss's CEO and Dong-won Lee its chief operations officer. South Korea's prime minister, Kim Min-seok, said the game "opened a new chapter for K-content".

What comes next

Pearl Abyss calls Crimson Desert a "core IP that we intend to grow and expand long-term" (Inven Global, Aug 11, 2026). A Nintendo Switch 2 version has "reached a playable baseline" and is targeted for the first half of 2027 (Nintendo Switch 2 Version); whether more DLC follows is not decided, and multiplayer is only being researched. Meanwhile developers are gradually moving to DokeV, targeted for the second half of 2028, according to Pearl Abyss's 2Q26 earnings letter.
