Reed Devil

The Reed Devil is Crimson Desert's Chapter 3 main-story boss, fought in a field of reeds on the way to the Mountain of Frozen Souls in Hernand; after his first health bar he makes clones, and you break the scarecrow effigies (totems) with charged heavy attacks or Force Palm, while Blinding Flash can stun him (PCGamesN and TheGamer). Pearl Abyss eased the fight in patches 1.00.02 and 1.00.03.

The Reed Devil is an early main-story boss in Crimson Desert, a fast, masked swordsman fought in a field of tall reeds in Hernand: after his first health bar he splits into clones, and you break the scarecrow effigies around the arena with charged heavy attacks or Force Palm before you can hurt him again, while Blinding Flash stuns him. Game Rant places the fight in Chapter 3 on the way to the Mountain of Frozen Souls, and TheGamer calls him "the first major boss" of the game. He was hard enough that Pearl Abyss rebalanced him in its launch-day patch, 1.00.02 on Mar 19, 2026 (notice 72). Pearl Abyss first showed the fight in a gamescom 2024 video made in a pre-release demo build, where it opens with the boss's health bar over a golden field below red cliffs.

Where the fight happens

The Reed Devil is fought where he lives: in the reeds. Pearl Abyss's video opens with Kliff crossing a wide field of golden grass under blue sky, red rock cliffs and a lone tree around him. In the finished game the chase begins when the Reed Devil escapes from Glenbright Manor: you follow him up the cliffs, fighting ambushers on the way, to the reed fields where the fight takes place (PCGamesN, Mar 19, 2026; TheGamer, Mar 19, 2026). PCGamesN notes that the ambushers keep coming until the nearby scarecrow is destroyed, and that you can run past them along the road.

He makes an entrance. In the video a hooded, masked figure rises out of the grass and speaks to Kliff before the two square off and the first blows are struck.

Phase one: the duel

The first phase is pure speed. In the video the screen flashes red as the Reed Devil's fastest strikes come in a blur of light, and he darts around Kliff between them. PCGamesN says he is aggressive and can teleport: block, attack when he pauses to sheathe his sword again, and parry when you can. TheGamer adds that he throws knives, which your shield blocks.

Phase two: clones and scarecrows

The second phase is a hunt for effigies. In the video, after a short scene, the boss's health bar gives way to a row of red markers at the top of the screen, and Kliff runs across the field to an upright straw figure standing in the grass. Both guides describe the same rule: the Reed Devil cannot be hurt until his effigies are gone. PCGamesN counts five scarecrows and says not to fight the clones but to dodge them while you break the effigies; a charged special attack destroys each in one hit (PCGamesN). TheGamer calls them totems and breaks them with a sword heavy attack or Force Palm, while several copies of the boss attack and he repeats a fast charged knife strike you must dodge (TheGamer).

Phase three: the last stand

With the effigies down it is one on one again, and faster. In the video his health bar is now red, and the pair cross the field in quick exchanges, his attacks flaring red and white. PCGamesN says he adds ranged attacks in this phase: keep your guard up and parry to fill his break bar, then use a finisher. TheGamer's key is Blinding Flash: it stuns him, interrupts his charged attack and holds him in place for your hits.

The video ends with a finishing scene in the reeds: Kliff cuts him down, the masked, horned Reed Devil falls, and a swarm of dark specks scatters into the air before the "Quest Complete" notice appears.

How Pearl Abyss changed the fight

The Reed Devil was one of the launch's sore points, and Pearl Abyss patched him twice in four days. Patch 1.00.02, on launch day, adjusted "the combat balance of certain bosses, including Reed Devil" (notice 72). Patch 1.00.03 on Mar 23, 2026 "lowered the difficulty of the ambush encounters triggered while heading toward the Reed Devil boss stage", reduced the health of certain main-quest bosses, increased the stun built up on bosses by a successful parry and fixed the Blinding Flash weakness not applying to certain enemies (notice 73). Since 1.04.00 on Apr 23, 2026, the Easy setting widens parry and dodge windows further (Difficulty and Accessibility).

Tips

  • Prepare. TheGamer recommends good gear, plenty of food and healing items such as Palmar Pills, and points to Battered Grains and Grilled Bird Meat dropped on the way.
  • Skip the ambushes. PCGamesN suggests running past the ambushers on the road.
  • Ignore the clones. Spend phase two on the effigies, not the copies.
  • Flash, then strike. Blinding Flash stops his charged attack and opens him up (Combat).
  • Come back later. If he is too much, PCGamesN suggests side tasks and puzzles first to earn skills (Skills and Abyss Artifacts).
