Boss Rematch

Boss Rematch, added in update 1.05.00 on May 2, 2026, lets you refight a defeated Crimson Desert boss by lighting your lantern at the site of the fight and reading its Memory Fragment, in Reminisce mode (the boss as first met) or Resonate mode (its stats raised to yours); consumables are restored and no loot drops.

Boss Rematch lets you refight a defeated Crimson Desert boss: light your lantern at the site of the fight, read the boss's Memory Fragment, and choose Reminisce (the boss exactly as you first met it) or Resonate (its stats raised to match yours). Pearl Abyss added it in update 1.05.00 on May 2, 2026 with 69 bosses, and five more in 1.07.00 on May 15 brought it to 74. The giant fights that Digital Foundry compared to "Shadow of the Colossus" in its PS5 Pro deep dive are the reason it exists: Pearl Abyss wrote that "as more regions of the continent were liberated, opportunities for combat naturally became less frequent". A rematch uses no items for good and gives no loot.

How to start a rematch

A boss's Memory Fragment only becomes active after you defeat it. In Pearl Abyss's gamescom 2024 video of the Staglord, a pre-release build, the duel ends with a finishing blow and Saigord slumped on a stone throne in the snowy ruins: that site is where the rematch later begins. Pearl Abyss's 1.05.00 notes give the steps:

  1. Defeat the boss once in the story or its questline.
  2. Find its Memory Fragment, marked on the World Map and the minimap. Under Knowledge > Memory Fragments > Bosses, "Open Map" shows exactly where you fought it.
  3. Go to the site, light your lantern and read the Memory Fragment.
  4. Choose Reminisce or Resonate, and fight.

Any of the three playable characters, Kliff, Oongka or Damiane, can take a rematch. Since 1.12.00 on Jun 19, 2026, a rematch also works at a stronghold that is being reconstructed after a Re-blockade (notice 100).

Reminisce and Resonate

The two modes differ only in the boss's strength. Reminisce fights the boss "exactly as they were when you first encountered them". Resonate scales the boss's stats to your progress, but "only applies if the player's stats are higher than the original boss's stats", so a boss never gets weaker than it was (notice 88). Phases and patterns stay those of the original fight: in the gamescom 2024 video of White Horn, the beast's health bar turns red for the later part of the fight as it keeps charging through the snowstorm. The difficulty setting still applies on top, and Hard adds combat patterns for certain bosses (1.04.00; Difficulty and Accessibility).

Rewards

A rematch is practice and challenge, not farming. "Any consumables used will be restored to their prior state once the battle ends, and no separate loot can be obtained," Pearl Abyss wrote in the 1.05.00 notes, adding that this "may be changed through future updates". As of Oct 21, 2026, no later patch note has added rematch rewards.

Bosses added later

Update 1.07.00 on May 15, 2026 added five bosses to the 69 and moved the rematches of bosses first fought in The Abyss to land (notice 92). Pearl Abyss hid the names behind a spoiler dropdown; they are:

Boss Rematch site (1.07.00)
Muskan Bonepit
Corrupted Caliburn Fort Musket
Goyen Spire of the Sun
Draven, the Crowcaller Church of West Demeniss
Clockwork White Horn Gate to Advancement

When Damiane and Oongka gained access to the Abyss in 1.13.00 on Jul 3, 2026, Pearl Abyss changed the Memory Fragment locations again for Corrupted Caliburn, Goyen, Draven and the Clockwork White Horn (notice 105). Pearl Abyss has not published the full list of rematchable bosses; the game's own list is under Knowledge > Memory Fragments > Bosses.

Fixes and improvements since launch

Pearl Abyss kept tuning the feature through the summer (Patch Notes):

  • 1.06.00 (May 11, 2026, notice 90): fixed the leave-the-area warning, invisible characters and a stuck combat-area marker during rematches against certain bosses, and a Titan rematch that began with Titan's hit.
  • 1.10.00 (Jun 5, 2026, notice 96): a changed element or ammunition slot is kept after dying and retrying a boss; fixed progress reverting after winning a rematch.
  • 1.12.00 (Jun 19, 2026): retrying a boss keeps your primary and secondary weapons, selected element, arrows and food in quick slots, and knowledge learned by observation (notice 100).
  • 1.13.00 (Jul 3, 2026): new Memory Fragment sites for four Abyss bosses (notice 105).

Re-blockade

Boss Rematch arrived alongside Re-blockade, its companion for ordinary fights: enemies retake liberated strongholds at a frequency you choose (Stable, Conflict or War). Both came in 1.05.00 to keep the late game supplied with combat, and 1.10.00 added "Battle" and "Reconstruct" stages to Re-blockade.

Garden of Trials

Charting the Unknown, the DLC due on Oct 29, 2026, adds a second way to refight bosses: the Garden of Trials, a challenge opened after the main story in which Kliff faces bosses from his adventures "one after another" for special rewards, Pearl Abyss said on Oct 20, 2026. Its full boss list has not been published, as of Oct 21, 2026. More on Charting the Unknown.
