Hernand

Hernand, the Duchy of Hernand, is the region of Crimson Desert's continent Pywel where Kliff's journey after the Black Bears' ambush takes shape, home to the city of Hernand, the besieged city of Calphade, the Greymane camp at Howling Hill and the House Serkis questline. Most of Chapters 2 to 6 of the main story take place there, according to Game Rant's chapter list.

Hernand, the Duchy of Hernand, is the region of Pywel where Crimson Desert's story finds its feet after the Black Bears scatter the Greymanes: Kliff reaches the city of Hernand, founds his new camp on Hernand land and fights in the war over its cities. In IGN's 13-minute recording of the gamescom 2025 demo, a commander at the front tells Kliff that the castle may fall to a mutiny, and that if Marquis Lanford falls, all of Hernand is in danger. Pearl Abyss chose Hernand for its first long looks at the game: its gameplay trailer of Aug 22, 2023 showed Kliff "investigating events that transpire in the region of 'Hernand'", and its 2024 gameplay video and both 2025 demos are set there.

The city of Hernand

The city of Hernand is the first great city Kliff reaches. Pearl Abyss's "50 Minutes of Early Gameplay" (Sep 12, 2024, a pre-release build) walks him up cobbled streets between white stone houses with tiled roofs, past townspeople and guards in blue, out through green fields of cypress trees and back to a towering castle gate. Pearl Abyss's summary of that video says that "in the city of Hernand, Kliff is guided to the mysterious realm known as the Abyss", meets Alustin and the White Crow, who gives him the power to glide, fights a duel in Hernand and is asked to investigate an incident there (see The Abyss).

Pearl Abyss's patch notes fill in the city. The Private Storage sits "at the initial temporary lodgings in Hernand" and at Howling Hill (1.00.03, Mar 23, 2026). The Hernand Saddlery sells saddles for wolves (1.06.00), the Hernand Tailor's Shop has a loom (1.12.00), and Hernand got one of seven wagon workshops in the trading overhaul of 1.16.00 on Aug 1, 2026 (Pearl Abyss). Patch 1.04.00 added a constabulary in southern Hernand (Pearl Abyss). TheGamer's review describes Hernand as a city watched by castle guards.

Hernand in the story

Spoilers follow. In Game Rant's chapter list, Chapter 2, "Golden Greed", includes the quests "Hernand in Chaos" and "The End of Greed" and ends against Kailok the Hornsplitter at the Goldleaf Guildhouse (the boss Pearl Abyss's 2024 video called Split Horn). In Chapter 3, "Howling Hill", Kliff receives land from Marquis Serkis of House Hernand and founds the Greymane Camp there; "A Fresh Start" sets up the camp and Damiane joins, according to TheGamer. Pearl Abyss itself calls it "the Greymane Camp in Hernand, a settlement established by Kliff and his Greymane companions after losing their home to the Black Bears" (Feb 12, 2026).

Chapter 5, "Guest Unbidden", brings Kearush the Slayer at Hernand Castle, and Chapter 6, "Cracks in the Shield", is a war chapter around Calphade, with Cassius Morten in the City of Calphade and the Black Bear Siege Engine in Calphade Territory, according to Game Rant's boss list. The story returns in the Epilogue, "Journey's End", whose quests include "Peace in Hernand". The whole sequence is on Main Quests and Chapters.

Calphade under siege

Calphade is the Hernand city whose siege Pearl Abyss used as its demo in 2025. At Summer Game Fest (Jun 7 to 9, 2025) Kliff heads to Calphade on news of his comrade Oongka and finds it besieged: "Cassius Morten, once a loyal officer to Marquis Stefan Lanford of Calphade, has betrayed him and allied with the Drunken Black Bears in a violent rebellion" (Pearl Abyss, Jun 10, 2025). The gamescom 2025 demo took players to "the battlefields of Calphade" again; in IGN's recording of it, Kliff mans a cannon and is told to aim for the smoking enemy watchtowers.

In the released game the war over Calphade has its own rules. Update 2.00.00 (Aug 25, 2026) fixed a bug that sent a wanted Kliff to the prison of Calphadean Castle "while the region was at war" (Pearl Abyss), and the Calphade Saddlery sells saddles for bears and Kuku Birds (1.06.00, May 11, 2026). Barden Middler, "a central figure in Calphade" in Pearl Abyss's words, appears in the Calphade ending cutscene named in the 2.01.00 notes (Sep 4, 2026).

Bosses and places

Hernand has the most bosses of any region, 16 in Game Rant's list, tied with Demeniss. Pearl Abyss's Staglord video (gamescom 2024 demo build) shows one setting: Kliff climbs into snowbound castle ruins until an armored warrior with a stag's head and great antlers hung with red ribbons appears on the steps ahead. TheGamer places Saigord the Staglord at the Icemoor Castle Ruins in the House Serkis questline; the Reed Devil waits at the Mountain of Frozen Souls in Chapter 3.

Game Rant's Hernand list also names Marni's Excavatron, Queen Spider, Cubewalker Lithus, Runewalker Vordis, The Crimson Nightmare, Giath, Sizlek the Insatiable, Sir Catfish, Hemon Beindel, Gwen Kraber, Cassius Morten, Kearush the Slayer, Kailok the Hornsplitter and Walter Lanford, and places them at sites such as Karin Quarry, Arboria Castle, Fort Perwin, Drakesfall Castle, Fort Hellwood, The Eldertree and Fort Warspike. One of the three "Overwhelming Beings", Beloth the Darksworn, waits in Hernand's Hoenmark Ruins. Defeated bosses can be fought again through Boss Rematch; the full list is on Bosses.
