The road to Umbra
Chapter 12 goes into the Abyss, the realm of floating stone above Pywel. According to Game Rant's boss list, Kliff first defeats Corrupted Caliburn at the Dimensional Bonds, then Myurdin, the Avatar of Umbra, the last form of the Black Bears' leader, and finally Umbra itself in the Umbra Abyss. Pearl Abyss's own patch notes use the names "Corrupted Caliburn", "Myurdin, the Avatar of Umbra" and "Umbra", and Corrupted Caliburn joined Boss Rematch in 1.07.00 (May 15, 2026).
Pearl Abyss's launch trailer (Mar 12, 2026) shows that end of the game without naming it: rings and towers of stone floating in the clouds of the Abyss, a giant roaring brute, then lightning over a storm-dark sea and Kliff on the back of a black dragon at night, before a blaze of fire. Pearl Abyss described the trailer as showing "battles against fearsome bosses" and "dragon-riding combat".
How to beat Umbra
Game Rant's guide (Jake Fillery, Apr 28, 2026) describes the fight:
- Fireballs: from Blackstar, use Fireball (RB or R1) on any part of Umbra's body. This fills its stun bar, not its red health bar.
- The eye: when the stun bar fills, you are thrown off the dragon. Glide toward Umbra's eye; Aerial Roll and Swift Flight get you there faster.
- Force Palm: once you are close to the eye, use Force Palm (R3).
- Repeat: there is no second phase, but you may need to go through the cycle twice.
- Stay alive: avoid the pillars and the laser beams to protect your dragon's health, and stay close to Umbra to keep it stunned longer. You cannot fail: falling off or losing the dragon's health puts you back on Blackstar.
Force Palm is the same skill Kliff uses on bosses all game (see Combat). Since version 2.00.00 (Aug 25, 2026) a "Flying Mount Controls" option lets you steer flying mounts by the camera or manually (see Mounts).
The game ties Umbra to the darkness its enemies hope for. In Pearl Abyss's 2024 video of the witch Hexe Marie, she says that when Umbra brings darkness the corpses of "foolish witches" will pile into a mountain and she will stand on top of it "and witness the arrival of true paradise", as her fight with Kliff begins.
After Umbra
Beating Umbra ends the main quest; the Epilogue, "Journey's End" in Game Rant's chapter list, follows, and the world stays open. Pearl Abyss fixed a bug that stopped players customizing or dyeing Kliff after defeating Umbra in version 1.05.00 (May 2, 2026).
Since version 2.00.00 (Aug 25, 2026), after completing all main quests you can start a new game that carries over Abyss Links and currency, and version 2.03.00 (Sep 18, 2026) gives more than 1,000 silver to a new game started from an existing save. There is no classic New Game Plus. The free Crimson Desert Enhanced update also added new cutscenes and story moments through the main questline.
