The Abyss

The Abyss is the mysterious realm floating in the sky above Pywel in Crimson Desert, "where a mystical imbalance endangering the world must be restored" (Steam). Kliff reaches it through gates, solves its puzzles for Abyss Artifacts and uses its Abyss Nexus points to fast travel; since patch 1.13.00 (Jul 3, 2026) Damiane and Oongka can enter it too.

The Abyss is the mysterious realm floating in the sky above Pywel in Crimson Desert, a world of stone islands, towers and gardens "where a mystical imbalance endangering the world must be restored", in the words of the Steam store. Kliff reaches it through gates, solves its puzzles for Sealed Abyss Artifacts, the game's main reward for growing stronger, and uses its Abyss Nexus points as the fast-travel network of the whole continent. Pearl Abyss's "50 Minutes of Early Gameplay" (Sep 12, 2024, a pre-release build) shows the first crossing: in a library, a wall breaks apart into glowing white blocks, Kliff walks through, and he comes out in a sunny garden of white stone, cypress trees and a domed tower, then into a hall where books and blocks hang in the air.

A view looking down from great height. Pale stone platforms shaped like broken rings, round courtyards and long slabs hang in the air above white clouds and a green land far below. Thin blue beams of light cross the scene, and at left a black, spiky cloud-like mass floats beside smaller islands.

What the Abyss is

The Abyss is both a place and the source of the story's threat. "A central threat emerges from the Abyss, a mysterious realm whose growing imbalance sends fragments crashing into Pywel", Pearl Abyss said on Jan 29, 2026; there are those "who would exploit these remnants", and "restoring balance to the Abyss and confronting those who exploit its power" drive the plot. The Official Launch Trailer (Mar 12, 2026) gives it a few seconds: great stone rings turning among clouds, dark towers above the cloud sea shooting beams of blue light, and broken rings of stone hanging over a red canyon. Pearl Abyss's own apparel line in April 2026 described the game as "the world below and the Abyss above", with the Abyss's "intricate, labyrinth-like architecture".

The Abyss also drives Kliff's growth. Progression "is driven by fragments of the Abyss, a key resource used to unlock and enhance skills", in Pearl Abyss's words: Crimson Desert has no experience levels, and Abyss Artifacts raise health and stamina or unlock skills. How they are spent, and the Abyss Link that shares them with Damiane and Oongka since 2.00.00, is on Skills and Abyss Artifacts.

Getting there

Kliff first enters the Abyss early in the story. Pearl Abyss's summary of its 2024 video says that "in the city of Hernand, Kliff is guided to the mysterious realm known as the Abyss", where "the enigmatic Alustin and White Crow" give him "a new and powerful gliding ability". The footage shows the way back down: past a stone block floating in the sky, Kliff stands with a woman in white under a wide-brimmed hat, the view drops to the land far below the clouds, and he dives off and glides down toward Pywel. Game Rant describes mystical gates from Pywel to the Abyss, and TheGamer's review describes it as a mythical land floating above Pywel, with parkour sections.

Under a pale, misty sky, giant gray pillars carved with angular patterns rise on both sides of a stone stairway. A figure with a round shield on his back walks up the steps toward them. Broken stone rings, curved fragments and loose blocks hang in the air, and a small black sphere floats at the center of one ring.

Until July 2026 only Kliff could go. Patch 1.13.00 (Jul 3, 2026) let Damiane and Oongka enter the Abyss, and moved the Memory Fragments of some rematchable bosses because of it (Pearl Abyss).

Abyss puzzles

Abyss puzzles are the Abyss's main activity, and solving one opens a Sealed Abyss Artifact. They are built from Kliff's powers: Force Palm pushes objects, Axiom Force pulls them and Blinding Flash fires a beam of light at switches, according to TheGamer, and Pearl Abyss's notes mention laser switches and a cube in the Monolith Crown Abyss and Skybridge Alignment Devices that must be set on their activation points. Game Rant says the elements (fire, ice and lightning) are unlocked through Abyss puzzles too.

Pearl Abyss has made them easier to read since launch. Patch 1.00.03 (Mar 23, 2026) made Skybridge Alignment Devices easier to find and trigger as soon as they sit in the right spot (Pearl Abyss); 1.00.02 meant the puzzle in the Chapter 4 Tenebrum fight is not replayed after a death (Pearl Abyss); and 1.03.00 (Apr 11, 2026) "improved convenience for certain Abyss puzzles" and marked restored and unrestored Abyss locations with different map icons (Pearl Abyss). Since 1.08.00 (May 22, 2026), markers placed while in the Abyss show only in the Abyss.

Abyss Nexus

An Abyss Nexus is a fast-travel point: once found and activated, Kliff can teleport to it from anywhere, and he is revived at a nearby one after giving up a fight. Pearl Abyss added more of them "across the continent of Pywel" in 1.00.03 (Mar 23, 2026), one in Pailune in 1.02.00 (Apr 4, 2026; Pearl Abyss), and in 1.03.00 (Apr 11, 2026) made them easier to discover and usable while mounted, falling, swimming or climbing. More on travel is on the Pywel page.

The Abyss in the story

Spoilers follow. The story ends in the Abyss. In Game Rant's chapter list, Chapter 12 is "The Abyss", with the quests "The Final Battle", "Forbidden gate", "The Void", "A Shadow in the Void" and "Blinding Darkness". Kliff chases Caliburn through a run of Abyss puzzles to an Abyss Gate, and the last bosses follow: Corrupted Caliburn at the Dimensional Bonds, then "Myurdin, the Avatar of Umbra", then Umbra in the Umbra Abyss, the final boss, according to Game Rant.

The Abyss's bosses can be fought again, but on land: patch 1.07.00 (May 15, 2026) moved the rematches of bosses "originally found in the Abyss" to places on the ground (Pearl Abyss).

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to the Abyss in Crimson Desert? Crimson Desert's story takes Kliff to the Abyss early on, guided there in the city of Hernand (Pearl Abyss); after that, gates and Abyss Nexus points lead back, and since patch 1.13.00 (Jul 3, 2026) Damiane and Oongka can go too.

How do you solve Abyss puzzles in Crimson Desert? Crimson Desert's Abyss puzzles use Kliff's powers: Force Palm pushes, Axiom Force pulls and Blinding Flash lights switches, according to TheGamer, and devices such as Skybridge Alignment Devices must be set on their activation points; each solved puzzle opens a Sealed Abyss Artifact.

What is an Abyss Nexus in Crimson Desert? An Abyss Nexus is Crimson Desert's fast-travel point: once activated, Kliff can teleport to it, and since patch 1.03.00 (Apr 11, 2026) even while mounted, falling, swimming or climbing.

What are Abyss Artifacts for? Abyss Artifacts are Crimson Desert's progression resource: with no experience levels, they raise health and stamina or unlock skills, and they come from Abyss puzzles, bosses and hidden places.

Can Damiane and Oongka go to the Abyss? Yes. Crimson Desert's patch 1.13.00 (Jul 3, 2026) let Damiane and Oongka enter the Abyss; before it, only Kliff could.

What are the floating islands in Crimson Desert? The stone islands, rings and towers floating in Crimson Desert's sky are the Abyss, a separate realm above Pywel whose "growing imbalance sends fragments crashing into Pywel" (Pearl Abyss, Jan 29, 2026).
