Main Quests and Chapters

Crimson Desert's main story is a Prologue ("Dead of the Night"), 12 chapters and an Epilogue ("Journey's End"), according to Game Rant's chapter list. Damiane joins in Chapter 3, when Kliff founds the Greymane camp at Howling Hill, Oongka becomes playable in Chapter 7, and Chapter 12 ends in the Abyss against Umbra.

Crimson Desert's main story is a Prologue, 12 chapters and an Epilogue, according to Game Rant's chapter list (Mar 19, 2026): it opens with "Dead of the Night", the Black Bears' night attack on the Greymanes, and closes with "Journey's End" after the final battle in The Abyss. Pearl Abyss's "50 Minutes of Early Gameplay" (Sep 12, 2024, a pre-release build) begins on that night, Kliff fighting through a burning camp. This page lists every chapter with its places and main bosses, says what each one unlocks (the camp and Damiane in Chapter 3, Oongka in Chapter 7, the dragon Blackstar late in the story), and notes the patch fixes Pearl Abyss has made to the quests since launch on Mar 19, 2026. The Story page tells the plot; this one is the walkthrough order.

Spoilers follow for the whole main story.

Around them stand pale walls and towers carved with geometric patterns and a lit lamp on a pillar at right. In the right foreground a figure in a dark cloak with a round metal shield and a quiver stands in grass and red and yellow flowers.

Prologue to Chapter 2: the ambush and Hernand

The Prologue, "Dead of the Night", runs from the quest "Ambush" to "New Journey" in Game Rant's list. The Black Bears fall on the Greymanes at night and scatter them, and Kliff faces their leader, Myurdin, in a fight that Game Rant says cannot be won. Chapter 1, "The First Encounter", brings Kliff to Hernand and ends with the quest "Woman in White".

Gliding comes early. In Pearl Abyss's 2024 footage Kliff meets a figure in a white robe and wide white hat in white ruins above the clouds, then glides down over the land to a cliff town; Pearl Abyss's description says White Crow gives Kliff the gliding ability in the Abyss. Chapter 2, "Golden Greed", sets Kliff against the Goldleaf Merchants and ends with Kailok the Hornsplitter at the Goldleaf Guildhouse. Its first quest, "Unexpected Gift", is where Bilwise now gives Kliff Double Jump: patch 2.00.00 (Aug 25, 2026) moved the skill there.

Chapter 3: Howling Hill, the camp and Damiane

Chapter 3, "Howling Hill", is where the open game begins in earnest. According to TheGamer's camp guide (Apr 27, 2026), Kliff meets Marius, receives a land grant from Marquis Serkis of House Hernand and founds the Greymane Camp at Howling Hill in the quest "A Fresh Start", which also unlocks Damiane as a playable character (Game Rant names the quest "Homestead"). Other quests of the chapter in Game Rant's list include "The Face Behind the Mask", "Dance with the Devil", "Bustling Hill" and "Greymanes Reunited". Pearl Abyss added a tutorial quest about Abyss Gears at the start of Chapter 3 in patch 1.00.02 on launch day, Mar 19, 2026, and eased the Reed Devil, the chapter's boss, in the same patch.

Chapters 4 to 6: knowledge, crows and war

Chapter 4, "The Price of Knowledge", includes "The Words of Alustin", "Gate to the Otherworld" and "Spire of the Stars", and the Tenebrum battle with its puzzle section. Since patch 1.00.02 a player who dies in that fight no longer replays the puzzle, and since patch 1.18.00 (Aug 15, 2026) the broken kiln in "Mysterious Pot" at the Kilnden Workshop can be put back together with Force Current. Chapter 5, "Guest Unbidden", brings a Demenissian delegation and two bosses, Kearush the Slayer at Hernand Castle and Draven the Crowcaller at the Crow's Nest.

Chapter 6, "Cracks in the Shield", is a war chapter at Calphade, with quests such as "To the Battlefield", "Fire on the Frontlines", "The Unyielding Shields" and "A Thousand Troops". IGN's "13 Minutes of Gameplay" (Aug 15, 2025) shows the 2025 public demo, which Pearl Abyss described as Kliff arriving "on the battlefields of Calphade in search of one of his Greymane comrades": a soldier reports another outpost lost to the Black Bears, Kliff is told his comrade is holding out in the keep, and he must use the cannons on the enemy's watchtowers to clear a path. The chapter's bosses are Cassius Morten in the City of Calphade and the Black Bear Siege Engine.

Chapter 7: Homecoming and Oongka

Chapter 7, "Homecoming", takes the war back to Pailune, the Greymanes' homeland, for the rematch the Prologue promised: Kliff faces Myurdin at Ashclaw Keep and Ludvig at Pailune Castle. Pearl Abyss's 2024 footage shows the first meeting, in the Prologue: subtitles give Myurdin the lines, and his boss bar appears at the top of the screen. When Kliff is incapacitated at Ashclaw Keep in "Decisive Battle", Oongka becomes playable, according to Game Rant. Liberating Pailune moves the camp there; Pearl Abyss's patch 1.03.00 (Apr 11, 2026) fixed bounties and dispatches for players who liberated Pailune while wanted in Chapter 7, and patch 1.18.00 fixed "Time to Face Justice", which blocked progress if the player switched to Oongka before meeting Torstein.

Chapters 8 and 9: Demeniss and the desert

Chapter 8, "Blood Coronation", goes to Demeniss: "To Demeniss", "The Cursed Knight", "The Blood Coronation" and "A Fleeting Dream", with Gabriel Caliburn at Demeniss Castle and three more bosses at its forts.

Chapter 9, "The Sage of the Desert", reaches the Crimson Desert, with "The Cloister of Enlightenment", "Jijeong Temple in Chaos", "Veiled Witch" and "Black Witch". Its best-known boss is Hexe Marie; Pearl Abyss's boss video (Dec 5, 2024, a pre-release build) has her speak of the day Umbra casts absolute darkness upon the land before the fight begins. Game Rant counts two story fights here that the in-game Knowledge tab leaves out, Goyen and Master Du. Pearl Abyss's patches touched this chapter twice: 1.03.00 fixed requests that could not be finished after "Sanctum of Mortification", and 2.00.00 lets players restart the "Mysterious Voice" guide cutscene if Woosa or Maegu dies.

Chapters 10 to 12: Delesyia, Golden Star and the Abyss

Chapters 10 and 11, "Counterattack" and "Truth and Reality", are fought in Delesyia against Marni's machines: the Clockwork Mantis, then Thunder Tank, Storm Crusher and Golden Star, a golden mechanical dragon. IGN's "Golden Star Quest Gameplay" (Oct 13, 2025, a pre-release build) shows the dragon rising from ruins and the arena fight around it. Patch 2.00.00 split the Golden Star battle into distinct phases with their own attacks. Guides place the dragon Blackstar as Kliff's mount after this fight, in Chapter 11; Game Rant's mounts page says only "the final chapter", so this page says "late in the story" (see Mounts).

Chapter 12, "The Abyss", has quests such as "The Final Battle", "Forbidden gate", "The Void", "A Shadow in the Void" and "Blinding Darkness". Kliff pursues Caliburn into the Abyss and fights Corrupted Caliburn, then "Myurdin, the Avatar of Umbra", then Umbra, the final boss. The Epilogue, "Journey's End", follows with "A New Beginning", "Peace in Hernand", "The Heart of Pywel" and "New Horizons".

After the main quests

The main questline is not the one players found at launch. Crimson Desert Enhanced (patch 2.00.00, Aug 25, 2026), a free update, "improved the narrative flow of the main story", added new cutscenes and story moments, and improved the main quest interface; its announcement trailer puts "Updated with new story moments" on screen. Since then a player who has finished all main quests can start a new game carrying over Abyss Links and currency, and since 2.03.00 (Sep 18, 2026) at least 1,000 silver too. Since patch 1.18.00, the Knowledge menu has a Quests category with Main Quests, Faction Quests, Investigation Quests and five other groups, so finished chapters can be read again. Every boss beaten in the story can be fought again through Boss Rematch.
